The Electronic Tag

The electronic RFID tag, or e-tag, is a small device a bit larger than a pack of cigarettes with a “pin” or screw-mount that is placed through a container door latch, similar to a bolt seal.

There are two manufacturers participating in the pilot program: Shanghai Super Electronics Technology (red/black e-tag) and Beijing Gabriel (green e-tag). Both e-tags have data storage capability, an open-detection with event logging, and transmit information via radio signal. The expected cost per e-tag will be in the $5-10 range and they are designed to be re-usable. E-tag battery life is estimated at 5-7 years.
